Permit fees vary by category. Migrationsverket charges an application fee for a work permit and a lower one for each accompanying family member; the current amounts are on its work permit page. There is no separate "permanent visa" fee category in Migrationsverket's schedule.

Duty-free treatment requires more than owning your belongings. Tullverket requires normal residence outside the EU for at least one year before your move. Items must be owned and used for at least six months before departure. You must bring them into Sweden within 12 months of registering as a resident. Housing Costs by City and Location

A one-bedroom apartment in Stockholm's city center costs about $1,700 to $1,900 a month; outside the center, about $1,000 to $1,200, per Wise. Gothenburg costs about $950 to $1,100 in the city center and about $750 to $850 outside it. Malmö costs about $1,000 to $1,150 in the city center and about $850 to $950 outside it. Sweden's Bostadskö, the housing queue Stockholm uses to allocate rent-controlled apartments, works by registration time, not need. Whoever received a standard rental through the queue in 2025 had been registered for an average of 9.0 years, per Bostadsförmedlingen Stockholm. Tuition is free for EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens, per universityadmissions.se. Holders of a permanent Swedish residence permit are exempt too, as their own category, independent of citizenship. A non-EU student on a study permit still pays tuition.
