Whether you have just landed or have been here a year, these steps unlock each other in sequence. Start wherever you actually are.

    • Staying more than three months requires a residence permit (uppehållstillstånd) (utlänningslagen 1 kap. 5 §) or, for EU/EEA citizens and their family, a right of residence (uppehållsrätt) (utlänningslagen 3 a kap. 1 § and 3 §).
    • Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) decides applications. Parliament and government set the rules.
    • For new applications decided from 1 June 2026, a work permit needs a salary of at least 90 percent of the median, SEK 34,470 a month from 16 June 2026 (Migrationsverket).
    • Swiss citizens need a residence permit after three months (Migrationsverket).
    • If you lose your job on a work permit, you may stay three months after your last working day to find a new one, as long as the permit is still valid (Migrationsverket).

Essential Sweden checklist

  • Personnummer before everything. Bank, BankID and healthcare apps all wait on it.

  • Bring your permit decision on paper. Skatteverket and banks still ask for it.

  • Join a housing queue the week you decide to move. Queue time is the currency.

  • An ISK is the default way to save here. Flat-taxed, no filing on every trade.
