English-Speaking Jobs in Sweden by Sector

Most jobs in Sweden require Swedish. Arbetsförmedlingen, the public employment service that runs Platsbanken, Sweden's national job board, says it plainly: "most jobs require fluency." Recruiters agree. In a 2022 SNS study of more than 800 recruiters, "more than eight out of ten view a good command of Swedish as crucial in their workplace, which also applies to low-skilled occupations." No Swedish authority publishes a share of jobs that run in English, so treat any percentage quoted elsewhere as an estimate, not an official figure.

Arbetsförmedlingen also names the exception: in higher technical and highly qualified roles, and at large international companies, "English is often the working language." This guide shows where official data points to that kind of hiring, where it does not, and the salary a non-EU offer must clear before Migrationsverket, the agency that decides work permits, will grant one.

How Much of Sweden's Job Market Runs Without Swedish

No Swedish authority publishes a share of jobs that run in English. Arbetsförmedlingen's guidance for foreign jobseekers says "most jobs require fluency" and that "most of the jobs advertised in Sweden will assume that the applicant speaks good Swedish," per Arbetsförmedlingen.

Employers say the same. In the 2022 SNS study by Eriksson and Rooth, "almost nine out of ten recruiters view poor Swedish language skills as an obstacle to hiring immigrants," per SNS.

The public sector has a legal reason to work in Swedish. Språklag (SFS 2009:600), the law that sets the language of Swedish public bodies, says in §10 that the language of courts, administrative authorities and other bodies carrying out public tasks is Swedish, per Riksdagen. The law governs how those bodies do their work, not who they hire, but it makes Swedish the language the work is done in.

Being accessible without Swedish also means something narrower than a company merely accepting an English CV. It means the internal working language, the one used in meetings, documentation, and daily correspondence, is English by default. A Stockholm employer that reviews an English application but runs its actual operations in Swedish still expects Swedish fluency once you are hired. Read what Swedish workplace expectations look like once hired for what changes after the offer.

The closest official data is a proxy. Employers posting on Platsbanken can tag the languages a job needs, but the tag is optional. On 22 October 2026, 2,790 of 42,767 live ads (6.5 percent) tagged English and 6,031 (14.1 percent) tagged Swedish, per Sweden Unpacked's count through Arbetsförmedlingen's JobSearch API; at least 79 percent tagged neither. That is why the tag cannot give a share of jobs that run in English, and an English tag does not mean Swedish is not also required.

Where Official Data Points to English-Friendly Hiring

IT and engineering are where official data points to hiring without Swedish: they lead Migrationsverket's 2025 first-time work permits and the share of Platsbanken ads tagged English.

IT gives the clearest signal. "It-arkitekter, systemutvecklare, testledare med flera" (IT architects, systems developers, test managers and similar) was the largest occupation group for first-time work permits in 2025, with 2,182, and "Drift-, support- och nätverkstekniker" (operations, support and network technicians) ranked seventh with 250, per Migrationsverket. The same update says roughly half apply for and receive a work permit through a job in a highly qualified occupation. In Platsbanken's Data/IT field, 11.4 percent of live ads tagged English on 22 October 2026, the highest of the fields checked. Gaming is often described as English-first, but no official data measures it, so this guide does not treat it separately.

Engineering splits by function. "Ingenjörer och tekniker" (engineers and technicians, 1,147) and "Civilingenjörsyrken" (graduate engineering occupations, 1,068) ranked second and third for 2025 first-time permits, per Migrationsverket. On Platsbanken, 10.7 percent of ads in the technical field tagged English, against 3.9 percent in industrial manufacturing. Engineering roles show the English signal; production roles largely do not.

Life sciences and research show a weaker signal on thin data. In Platsbanken's natural-science field, 29 of 298 live ads (9.7 percent) tagged English, too small a sample to lean on. Migrationsverket does lower the salary floor for staff of young tech and life-science companies, covered in the permit section below.

Where Official Data Does Not Point to English-Friendly Hiring

Healthcare has the lowest English-tag share of the fields checked: 96 of 6,608 live health and medical care ads, 1.5 percent, on 22 October 2026. Industrial manufacturing, at 3.9 percent, also sits well below the technical field.

Finance, consulting, gaming and international organisations are often described as English-friendly, but no official source measures them. The nearest Platsbanken field, administration, finance and law, had 8.6 percent of ads tagged English, and it is too broad to say anything about finance or consulting specifically.

The Sectors Sweden's Own Employment Service Flags as International

Arbetsförmedlingen runs dedicated EURES advisers for six named sectors: Health, ICT, Engineering, Hospitality, Teaching, and Veterinary, per Arbetsförmedlingen.

EURES, the European Employment Services network, matches jobseekers in Europe with employers; one of its services is a targeted mobility scheme. A dedicated adviser shows where Arbetsförmedlingen supports recruitment from abroad. It does not mean the work runs in English. Health is the clearest case. Under Socialstyrelsen's regulations on licensing for people trained outside the EU and EEA (HSLF-FS 2017:80), applicants must show the necessary knowledge of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian, and the general advice sets that at C1 on the CEFR scale for licensed professions and at B2 for undersköterska, per Socialstyrelsen. A candidate reading "Health is internationally recruited" as "clinical roles hire without Swedish" would be reading past that requirement.

What a Non-EU Work Permit Requires Once You Have an Offer

A non-EU work permit requires a monthly salary of at least SEK 34,470, 90 percent of the national median, for applications received on or after 16 June 2026, per Migrationsverket.

Migrationsverket's June 2026 update put the national median salary at SEK 38,300, which produced the current SEK 34,470 floor. "It is the median salary published at the time of application that counts," so an offer negotiated before 16 June 2026 still needs to clear the figure in force on the day the application reaches the agency.

Some jobs get a lower floor: 75 percent of the median, currently SEK 28,725 a month. The exemption covers a list of occupations that includes several IT occupations, and groups including former students, researchers, doctors, dentists and nurses in the certification process, and staff of tech and life-science companies less than five years old with fewer than 100 employees, per Migrationsverket.

An offer inside an English-friendly field still fails at this stage if the salary sits below the floor that applies to it. Check which floor applies before assuming an IT offer must clear SEK 34,470. Read the work-permit process this salary threshold belongs to for the full application sequence around this figure, and what the salary threshold means after tax for what actually lands in a bank account.

Searching and Applying Without Swedish

Search Platsbanken and Arbetsförmedlingen's EURES listings, and apply in the language the listing uses.

A listing in English suggests an employer open to candidates without Swedish, but it is a hint, not a promise; the employer may still expect Swedish once you start. Arbetsförmedlingen describes Platsbanken as "Sweden's largest and most visited employment website." Its English pages also say: "If you are already living in Sweden, you can register as a jobseeker," per Arbetsförmedlingen.

Once an offer is on the table, check the contract against the relevant kollektivavtal, the agreement between unions and employers that covers pay and conditions in a sector, regardless of union membership. Collective agreements cover 88 percent of employees in Sweden: 83 percent in the private sector and 100 percent in the public sector. The figures come from Anders Kjellberg's Den svenska modellen 2025 (Lund University, 2023 data) and Medlingsinstitutet, the state body that mediates in labour disputes, as compiled by Worker-Participation.eu. Read how collective agreements and union coverage work for what to check in a contract before signing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of jobs in Sweden are open to English speakers?

No Swedish authority publishes that figure. Arbetsförmedlingen says most jobs require Swedish fluency. The closest proxy is Platsbanken's optional language tag: on 22 October 2026, 6.5 percent of live ads tagged English, but most ads tag no language, so that number is not a share of jobs.

Which sectors in Sweden hire without Swedish?

IT and engineering show the clearest official signal: they led Migrationsverket's 2025 first-time work permits and had the highest shares of Platsbanken ads tagged English on 22 October 2026. Arbetsförmedlingen also runs EURES advisers for Health, ICT, Engineering, Hospitality, Teaching, and Veterinary, but that marks recruitment from abroad, not English as the working language.

What salary does a non-EU work permit require in Sweden?

SEK 34,470 a month for applications received on or after 16 June 2026, 90 percent of the national median salary. Exempt occupations, which include several IT occupations, and staff of young tech and life-science companies need 75 percent, SEK 28,725, per Migrationsverket.

Do healthcare jobs in Sweden require Swedish?

Yes for licensed clinical roles. If you trained outside the EU and EEA, Socialstyrelsen's general advice sets C1 Swedish for licensed professions and B2 for undersköterska, even though Arbetsförmedlingen runs EURES advisers for Health.

IT and Engineering Show the Clearest Official Signal; Most of Sweden's Job Market Still Runs on Swedish

Arbetsförmedlingen says most jobs in Sweden require fluency, and no authority measures how many run in English. Where official data does point to English-friendly hiring, it points to IT and engineering roles: the top occupations for 2025 first-time work permits and the highest English-tag shares on Platsbanken. Healthcare and production roles point the other way. For a non-EU offer, the salary still has to clear SEK 34,470 a month, or SEK 28,725 for exempt occupations, for applications received on or after 16 June 2026.

A reader who already has an offer in hand should confirm it against the work-permit process this salary threshold belongs to before applying. A reader still searching should start with the full job-search process for movers, which covers the steps behind the sector picture in this guide.
