That means every day, year-round, to hundreds of piers between Arholma in the north and Landsort in the south. That scale of service means a single day trip can only reach a small slice of it. The Vaxholm Ferry Takes About an Hour and a Quarter
SL, the regional transit operator, states that the trip to Vaxholm "tar ungefär en timma och en kvart" (SL). That means it takes about an hour and a quarter. This holds "oavsett om man tar SL:s pendelbåt 83 eller Waxholmsbolagets båtar": whether you take SL's commuter boat 83 or one of Waxholmsbolaget's own boats.

A Standard SL Ticket Covers the Vaxholm Crossing
Within what SL calls the SL zone, "från Strömkajen i innerstan till området runt Vaxholm" (SL). That zone runs from Strömkajen in the inner city to the area around Vaxholm. SL states, "räcker det att du reser med en SL-biljett": a standard ticket is enough. No separate Waxholmsbolaget fare applies on this route.
That ticket is priced at "Enkelbiljett (75 minuter): 43 kronor" (SL). That is a single ticket valid 75 minutes for 43 SEK, effective from 8 January 2025. The crossing departs from Strömkajen. Fares for destinations beyond Vaxholm could not be confirmed against a primary source and should be checked at Waxholmsbolaget's own site.
Vaxholm Fortress Dates to the Early 1500s
Vaxholm's fortifications go back to the early 1500s. The fortress museum's own site credits an early blockhouse built "i början av 1500-talet... byggt av riksföreståndaren Svante Nilsson Sture" (Vaxholms Fästnings Museum). That credits the blockhouse to regent Svante Nilsson Sture. The county museum instead credits a redoubt Gustav Vasa had built "1549-58" (Stockholms läns museum).
Both sources agree the current stone Kastellet was built "1833-1863". Museum admission is 120 SEK for adults and 100 SEK for pensioners (Vaxholms Fästnings Museum). Youth aged 13–18 pay 60 SEK, and children aged 0–12 enter free. The museum opens seasonally, May through September.
June Through August Is the Warmest Window
SMHI's 1991–2020 normal puts the average daily high at "20,5°" in June, "23,5°" in July, and "22,0°" in August for Stockholm. Those three months are the warmest stretch for a day trip.
