Short answer: if you are folkbokförd (registered as a resident with Skatteverket), pregnancy check-ups at the barnmorskemottagning (MVC, the midwife clinic that follows your pregnancy) and the baby's check-ups and vaccinations at the barnavårdscentral (BVC, the child health centre that follows your child from birth to school age) cost nothing. A hospital stay for delivery can carry a daily fee. Your region sets it, under a ceiling in the law, and Skåne for example charges for each day you are admitted to förlossning and BB.

Who this is for, and who it is not

This guide is for families and partners who are pregnant or have a baby and live in Sweden. It follows the order you meet each step: first contact, pregnancy visits, delivery, the first BVC visit, vaccinations, then money.

It is not written for:

Prerequisites before any step applies

Healthcare in Sweden follows where you live, not which insurance you hold. The hälso- och sjukvårdslagen (2017:30, the Health and Medical Services Act) says that each region must offer care to people who live in it: "Regionen ska erbjuda en god hälso- och sjukvård åt den som är bosatt inom regionen." In practice, you need to be folkbokförd. Försäkringskassan says plainly that being registered with Skatteverket is enough, with no separate insurance needed: "Nej, för att få sjukvård i Sverige räcker det att du är folkbokförd hos Skatteverket."

  • Folkbokföring. Skatteverket expects you to register if you plan to stay at least a year: "Du som har flyttat till Sverige och planerar att bo här i minst ett år ska i de flesta fall vara folkbokförd här." (If you plan to live here a year or more, you should in most cases be registered.) See the one-year test for a personnummer.
  • If you are not registered. Region Stockholm's 1177 page says subsidised care needs registration: "För att du ska få subventionerad vård måste du bli folkbokförd här." In Region Stockholm, a residence permit alone does not change that; other regions publish their own rule on 1177.se. So if you are pregnant and not yet registered, ask your region on 1177.se what you would pay before booking, and read seeing a doctor before your personnummer arrives.
  • EU/EEA, Swiss and UK citizens who are not registered can, per Försäkringskassan, get care on the same terms as registered residents, but must show a certificate from Försäkringskassan.
  • Your regional rules. Each region sets its own patient fees; 1177 notes "Regionerna kan i stort sett själva bestämma vilka avgifter du ska betala."

For finding a regular clinic once registered, see registering at a vårdcentral and the overview of healthcare in Sweden.

Step 1: Pregnant, contact the barnmorskemottagning

A barnmorskemottagning ("MVC" is the common short name for maternity care, mödravård) runs Sweden's maternity care. (Contact a clinic as soon as you know you are pregnant.) You can find clinics through 1177.se.

At the clinic you can "prata med barnmorskan för råd, stöd och svar på dina frågor om graviditeten, förlossningen och tiden efteråt" (talk to the midwife for advice, support and answers about pregnancy, birth and afterwards), and have "undersökningar och prover" (examinations and tests) and "vård om du eller fostret behöver det" (care if you or the foetus need it).

Step 2: Check-ups and ultrasound during pregnancy

(You can visit regularly.) Visits are voluntary. "Alla gravida erbjuds ett ultraljud mellan vecka 18 och 20." (All pregnant people are offered an ultrasound between weeks 18 and 20.)

Around week 20 you get the paper you need for money: "Ungefär i vecka 20 får du ett intyg om graviditet av barnmorskan", the certificate you use to apply for föräldrapenning (parental benefit); it is the "intyg så att du kan ansöka om föräldrapenning".

(Voluntary and free.)

Step 3: Delivery

Delivery (förlossning, and the postnatal ward stay afterwards, BB) is hospital care, separate from the barnmorskemottagning, and fees are set by the region. The law caps the daily fee for inpatient care (hälso- och sjukvårdslagen 17 kap. 2 §) and each region sets its own. Region Skåne charges a fee for every day you are admitted to förlossningen and BB; BB hemma (postnatal care at home) is free there: "BB hemma är gratis." Check your own region's fee page on 1177.se before the due date, because other regions can differ.

Step 4: BVC after the birth

The barnavårdscentral (BVC) takes over. (Health checks and vaccinations from birth until the child starts förskoleklass.) See 1177 on BVC.

The first contact is a home visit: "Den första träffen med BVC brukar ske en-två veckor efter att ni har kommit hem. En sjuksköterska från BVC besöker er i hemmet." (A BVC nurse visits your home one to two weeks after you get back.) The BVC also offers parent groups: "Föräldrar får stöd i grupp, i så kallat föräldraskapstöd."

Cost: "Du betalar ingenting när ni besöker BVC." (You pay nothing.)

Step 5: Child vaccinations

Vaccinations come with BVC, under the 1177 child vaccination programme. "Alla barn i Sverige erbjuds och rekommenderas vaccination mot tolv sjukdomar." (All children are offered and recommended vaccination against twelve diseases.) They are your choice: "All vaccination är frivillig i Sverige." Cost: "Du betalar ingenting för barnets vaccinationer." (Free.)

Age (all at BVC)Vaccines, condensed from the 1177 schedule
6 weeksRotavirus (drops in the mouth)
3 and 5 monthsDifteri (diphtheria), stelkramp (tetanus), kikhosta (whooping cough), polio, Hib, hepatit B, pneumokocker (pneumococcus), rotavirus
12 monthsDifteri, stelkramp, kikhosta, polio, Hib, hepatit B, pneumokocker
18 monthsMässling, påssjuka, röda hund (measles, mumps, rubella)
5 yearsDifteri, stelkramp, kikhosta, polio

The table covers the BVC ages only; the twelfth disease on 1177's list, HPV, is given later by the school nurse.

"Barn till och med fem år vaccineras av sjuksköterskan på barnavårdscentralen, BVC." (Children up to and including age five are vaccinated by the BVC nurse.) After school starts, the school nurse takes over: "Barn som har börjat skolan vaccineras av skolsköterskan på elevhälsan." (Once at school, the school nurse does it.)

Step 6: What else it costs

  • Children's other care. "I de flesta regioner betalar barn och ungdomar fram till 20-årsdagen inte någon avgift i öppenvården", and "Läkemedel inom högkostnadsskyddet är kostnadsfria för barn under 18 år." See the high-cost cap guide for adult costs.
  • Parental benefit, at a glance. Försäkringskassan pays föräldrapenning (480 days per child, shared between parents): "Föräldrarna får 480 dagar per barn att dela på." You can start early: "Du kan ta ut föräldrapenning för barnet tidigast 60 dagar före den beräknade förlossningen." Eligibility and the daily amount depend on your income and insurance status, so check Försäkringskassan before you plan leave. If you settle in Sweden on or after 1 January 2027, föräldrapenning at the basic and lowest levels needs five years' residence or a qualifying work income first (Lag 2026:853); see who Försäkringskassan covers and what it pays.

Quick checklist

  1. Confirm you are folkbokförd (or hold the EU certificate).
  2. Phone a barnmorskemottagning as soon as you know you are pregnant.
  3. Keep the week-20 certificate for Försäkringskassan.
  4. Check your region's delivery fee.
  5. Expect the BVC home visit one to two weeks after you come home.
